Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB)
Overview
Established in 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (also known as IIT Bombay or IIT Mumbai) is the first public college to have laid its foundation stone with assistance from UNESCO. In 1961, it was declared as an Institute of National Importance by the Parliament of India. It has also been declared a 'Deemed University' and is autonomous in nature. IIT Bombay ranked 3 and 4 for both the 'Overall' and 'Engineering' categories, respectively, by the NIRF 2023 Rankings.
Globally, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay improved its ranking to 149 in the QS World Rankings 2024 from 172 in the QS World Rankings 2023. IIT Bombay offers degree and dual degree programmes at the UG, PG and doctorate levels. The institute offers 17 departments with more than 60 courses in the stream of Engineering, Technology, Science and Management. The applicants are chosen through national-level tests conducted by various authorities, such as JEE Advanced, GATE, etc.
With a lifespan of more than 60 years, IITB campus has grown to include 15 academic departments, 34 centres, 17 departments and three schools to offer more than 60 courses in the stream of Engineering and Technology, Science and Management at UG, PG and doctoral levels. Much like other IITs, the flagship course of IIT Bombay is BTech with a total intake of 1,036 students.
